Some Interesting Facts, Fire Safety Related or Not
- In 2020, a fire department responded to a fire on average every 23 seconds in the United States, according to the National Fire Protection Association. A home fire was reported every 89 seconds, a home fire death occurred every three hours and 24 minutes and a home fire injury occurred every 46 minutes.
- From 2012 to 2021, there were an average of 61,289 wildfires annually and an average of 7.4 million acres impacted annually. In 2021, 58,968 wildfires burned 7.1 million acres. As of September 2, 2022, nearly 48,500 wildfires have impacted about 6.2 million acres this year. Thank you to all of the firefighters that have helped prevent these numbers from being even higher. - First attempts at firefighting can be traced as far back as the 2nd century. It was then that an Egyptian from Alexandria named Ctesibus built a basic hand pump that could squirt a jet of water, but the idea was lost until the fire pump was reinvented about AD 1500.
- Today, fire fighters are a mix of paid, paid on-call and volunteer, but many areas still have fully-volunteer departments. It is clear that fire fighting is a brave and selfless profession with many challenges. Thanks to technology, though, fighting fires is becoming safer and more streamlined. There’s no way to predict what fire fighters of the future will look like, but we can be sure that they will continue to be heroic in the face of danger.

- That according to the NFPA there were approximately 1,140,900 firefighters in the United States in 2006. The total population of the United States in 2006 was approximately 300,000,000. This calculates to approximately one person out of every 265 is a firefighter!

- That Romanian firefighters could not get their trucks close enough to a burning building, so they put out the fire by throwing snowballs at it. Now that is being resourceful.
- That while Usain Bolt is fast, the cheetah can run almost three times faster at 70 MPH and the peregrine falcon can fly/dive almost 200 MPH! Bolt is definitely the most entertaining runner…the cheetah doesn’t normally pose after finishing a race!!

- Almost 60% of deaths in house fires occur in homes without a functional smoke alarm.
- That colonial laws in America required each house to have a bucket of water on the front stoop during fires at night. These buckets were intended for use by the initial “bucket brigade” that would throw water at fires.
